Shetland Sheepdog Puppies For Sale
Bennetts Sheltie Puppies is a state-registered Shetland Sheepdog breeder specializing in raising purebred Sheltie puppies. We have owned and raised Shetland Sheepdogs for more than 7 years. The Shetland Sheepdog, often affectionately called the Sheltie, originated in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, where it was originally used as a herding dog. The breed is closely related to the Collie and is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and beautiful long coat.
This small to medium-sized dog is classified under the Herding Breed Group by the Kennel Club. The Sheltie is admired for its elegant, flowing double coat that requires regular grooming to maintain its condition. Known for being gentle, responsive, and highly intelligent, the Sheltie is a loving and devoted companion, especially suitable for families with children.
Shetland Sheepdogs are alert, eager to please, and very quick learners, which makes them ideal for first-time dog owners who are willing to invest time in training and regular exercise. They are typically reserved with strangers but extremely affectionate with their families. The breed thrives on companionship and enjoys being part of household activities.
Shetland Sheepdogs usually get along well with other pets and have a strong instinct to herd, which may include gently herding small children or other animals. Due to their intelligence and awareness of their surroundings, Shelties also make excellent watchdogs, often barking to alert their owners of unfamiliar activity.
Most Shelties love cuddle time with their family and often form deep emotional bonds with their owners, following them from room to room. Once bonded, they can be very loyal and may become anxious if left alone for extended periods.
Shetland Sheepdogs have a longer average lifespan than many larger breeds, typically living 12–14 years. We understand that some people may have little or no knowledge about the Shetland Sheepdog breed but may still feel drawn to their charm and character. About the Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog’s origins trace back several centuries to the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, where the breed was developed to herd and guard flocks of sheep in harsh terrain. Thought to be a descendant of small Collie-type dogs, the Sheltie also shares ancestry with breeds like the Icelandic Sheepdog and other Nordic herding types. This intelligent and agile breed was a multipurpose farm dog, used not only for herding but also as a loyal companion and alert watchdog.
The Shetland Sheepdog is a small to medium-sized dog with an elegant appearance and a beautifully flowing double coat. Males typically stand 33–41 centimetres at the withers and weigh 6–12 kilos. Despite its smaller stature, the Sheltie is strong, graceful, and built for endurance. This breed is known for being eager to please and highly responsive to training, making it a cooperative dog ideal for obedience and task-oriented activities.
Shelties excel in a wide range of canine sports and activities, including agility, obedience, rally, herding trials, and even trick training. Their sharp minds and enthusiastic nature make them stand out in both competitive and recreational settings. Their herding roots also make them naturally alert, and while they are not aggressive, they can be vocal. A Sheltie will often bark to alert its owner of unusual activity or unfamiliar visitors.
Most Shetland Sheepdogs enjoy snuggling with their family members and crave close companionship. Once bonded with their owner, a Sheltie often becomes a loyal shadow, sticking close throughout the day. However, like any dog, individual temperament may vary, and the level of cuddliness often depends on both the dog’s personality and the owner’s nurturing. With early training and positive socialization, your Sheltie can grow into a warm, loving companion.
Shetland Sheepdogs generally get along well with other dogs and household pets. However, young male Shelties may sometimes display bossy or dominant behavior, especially around other males. Early socialization is key to helping your Sheltie develop into a confident, well-mannered adult dog.
This breed has a dense double coat that sheds year-round, with heavier shedding periods typically in spring and autumn. Frequent brushing is recommended, especially during these seasons, to keep their coat healthy and reduce tangles and loose fur. Show Shelties are typically presented in full coats with only minimal trimming, a grooming standard that is also encouraged for Shelties kept as family companions.

OUR STORY
Thanks for visiting our website. My name is Lucas Bennett, and together with my family, we proudly run Bennetts Sheltie Puppies. We’ve been devoted to breeding this incredible dog breed since 2017. As lifelong pet lovers, my wife and I took the initiative to raise Shetland Sheepdogs to help families looking to welcome a loyal, intelligent, and affectionate new member into their homes.
My knowledge of the Sheltie has grown immensely over the years. They are a remarkably smart breed, and every day we learn something new from them. My journey with dogs began during my Christmas holidays at the age of 10, when my parents surprised me with my first Shetland Sheepdog puppy, whom I named Liam. Liam gave me countless joyful childhood memories. He was more than just a pet—he was my best friend.
Any time I was upset or down, Liam was there to comfort me and bring a smile to my face. I often thought he could understand me perfectly—sometimes I’d even talk to him as though he might talk back. Wherever I went, Liam was by my side.
I met my wife in college, and we quickly became close friends. She instantly fell in love with Liam, and not long after, she persuaded her parents to get her a Sheltie of her own. Our dogs would play together constantly. Our shared love for this beautiful breed deepened our bond. Sadly, I lost Liam during our college years, but our connection to this breed only grew stronger.
Eventually, we got married and decided to turn our passion into something more. We began breeding and raising Shetland Sheepdogs, and educating others about the joys and responsibilities of owning this remarkable breed.
Today, we raise our two children and our Shelties on a peaceful 3-acre property, where the dogs have ample space to run, play, and thrive. We are committed to helping families find the perfect, healthy Sheltie for their homes. With a lifetime of experience and deep love for this breed, we truly believe that Shetland Sheepdogs are among the best companion dogs you can own.
We dedicate our time to training, socializing, and nurturing each puppy to ensure they are ready for their new homes. If you’re searching for a loyal, intelligent, and family-friendly dog, you’ve come to the right place.
